Granville to the Chausey Islands by boat: winter sailing dates set by the tide

Outside the summer season, Vedettes Jolie France sails from Granville to the Chausey Islands only on published dates, with one boat out and one back each time. After 2 November 2026 there are fourteen sailing days in November and nine in December; the crossing takes about an hour and an adult day return costs €34.50.

Pick your date before anything else. In late autumn and winter there is a single round trip on each sailing day, and the days are not consecutive: in December the boat goes only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, ending the year with the Wednesday 30 December sailing at 09:30 from Granville and 14:00 back from the islands. The first sailing in November after the 2nd is on Wednesday the 4th, leaving Granville at 12:00.

Then book, even in winter. Vedettes Jolie France says a crossing with fewer than 15 paying passengers may be cancelled, and the weather can stop the boat altogether, as it did on 23 October. You can book online, by phone on +33 2 33 50 31 81 or by email, and if every sailing of the day is called off you are offered a refund, a later date or a credit note.

Finally, bring food. The company announced on 27 October that the islands' cafés, bars and restaurants close for the winter from 1 November, and it offers to provide a packed lunch if you order a day in advance.

Day return €34.50; staying over costs more

All fares are returns, and for adults the price depends on when you come back rather than on the season. A same-day return is €34.50; if you stay on the islands, a deferred-return fare is charged automatically, €42.50 for more than 24 hours and €45.50 for more than 72. The brochure shows the same thing as overnight supplements of €8 for one or two nights and €11 for three or more.

Children aged 3 to 14 pay €22.90 and under-3s €11.50; from 15 the adult fare applies. Dogs cost €12.50 and must be kept on a lead. The optional archipelago tour, a commented trip lasting around 1 hr 15 min that starts from Chausey, adds €11.00 per adult and €9.80 per child.

Local residents of Granville Terre & Mer, and on 25 November residents of départements 14, 35, 50 and 61, can get lower fares, but only by phone and with proof of address, so they will not apply to most visitors. The 25 November rate is €32.00 per adult and €21.00 per child.

Granville ferry terminal, then slipway or pontoon

Granville

Gare maritime, rue des Isles, 50400 Granville · Granville

Boats leave from Granville's ferry terminal, the Gare Maritime on Rue des Isles. Coming into town, follow the signs for 'Les Ports' and then 'Gare Maritime' to the end of the road. The terminal is ringed by a large pay car park, which the company's 2026 brochure says charges from April to October and takes cards only. Collect your ticket at the desk an hour before departure; after that the company may resell the seat.

Chausey

Grande Île, Chausey: slipway or pontoon depending on the tide · Granville (Chausey archipelago)

On Chausey the boat ties up either at the slipway or at the pontoon, depending on the state of the tide, and at the pontoon the number of steps up to the quay varies with the water level. Wheelchair users should phone before booking: the crew lifts the passenger on board, so only manual chairs can be taken. An accessible path is marked in green on the island map.

An hour offshore to the Chausey archipelago

Chausey is a granite archipelago off Granville and belongs to the town, which is why the operator's brochure says no identity document is needed for the trip. Vedettes Jolie France puts the crossing at about an hour. Because departures are timed around the tide, the hours shift from one date to the next, and the company warns that small delays can happen.

Luggage, freight sailings and staying overnight

  • Luggage goes with the freight

If you are staying, take your bags to the boat at the freight time shown for your date, with your payment voucher. Outside that slot each passenger may carry only two bags by hand.

  • Confirm your return

After more than 24 hours on the islands, phone the office the day before to find out which boats you can take back. Without confirmation you may be refused boarding with your luggage.

  • No cars

The boats carry foot passengers. Leave the car at the terminal car park; kayaks, paddleboards, trunks and other bulky items travel separately on the freight barge La Chausiaise.

  • No petrol on board

Petrol is banned on the passenger boats and has to go on the barge.

  • Bring lunch

Nothing is open to eat on the islands from 1 November. The company can supply a packed lunch if you order it at least 24 hours before you sail.

  • Bikes: ask first

The company's pages give no rule for bicycles, so phone +33 2 33 50 31 81 before booking if you want to take one.

The boats behind the service

According to its fleet page, Vedettes Jolie France has three passenger boats: Jolie France, built in 2025, 32 metres long with room for 297; Joly France, from 2017; and Belle France, from 2021, each for 300 passengers. It does not say which one runs the winter sailings. Freight goes on La Chausiaise, a 22-metre barge that can carry 50 tonnes.

In October the company cut the service to Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until the 16th and then ran daily for the French autumn school holidays from the 17th. For the new year, both its website and its brochure announce a sailing on Saturday 2 January 2027, but only the online table gives the times, so check them before you plan around it.

Chausey out of season: practical questions

Do I need a passport to visit Chausey?

Not for the trip itself. The islands are part of the town of Granville, and the operator's brochure says no identity document is required.

How do I get to Granville without a car?

The company mentions a direct train from Paris Montparnasse Vaugirard taking about three hours. From the town centre, follow the signs for 'Gare Maritime' to reach the terminal.

Will the boat run if hardly anyone books?

Not necessarily: a sailing with fewer than 15 paying passengers can be cancelled. If all of the day's sailings are cancelled, you get a refund, a new date or a credit note.

Is there anywhere to eat on the islands in winter?

No. Cafés, bars and restaurants close from 1 November, so take a picnic or order one from the company at least 24 hours ahead.

How long can I spend on the islands in December?

It depends on the tide. On 12 December the boat leaves Granville at 08:00 and returns from Chausey at 11:00; on 19 December it is 11:00 out and 16:00 back.

What does a child ticket cost?

€22.90 for ages 3 to 14 and €11.50 for under-3s. From 15, the adult fare of €34.50 for a same-day return applies.

Can I stay overnight on the islands?

Yes. An adult pays €42.50 for a return after more than 24 hours or €45.50 after more than 72, and must phone the office the day before to confirm the boat back.
